Sanitation Driver

The City of Elkins is hiring a Sanitation Driver (Temporary to Potentially Permanent) to support critical sanitation services that keep our community clean and safe. This is an excellent opportunity to join a great team with potential for long-term employment and career growth.
Job Summary:
Under regular supervision, the Sanitation Driver operates garbage trucks and related equipment for the collection and transportation of residential and commercial waste. The role follows assigned collection routes, maintains vehicles and equipment, ensures compliance with safety standards, and may lead coworkers in the absence of the Sanitation Supervisor.
This position is temporary in nature, but may become permanent based on performance, department needs, and available funding.
Job Duties:
- Operate packer-type trucks equipped with hydraulic lifting devices to collect and transport refuse
- Follow assigned routes and maintain timely collection schedules
- Manually load and unload materials when needed
- Inspect, clean, and perform basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment
- Assist in training coworkers; provide leadership in supervisor’s absence
- Maintain logs and documentation as required
- Comply with all applicable safety regulations and ensure the use of proper safety gear
- Assist with other tasks such as snow removal or interdepartmental support as needed
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED
- One to three months of related experience or an equivalent combination
- Must possess a valid West Virginia CDL Class “B” license
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Familiarity with safe vehicle operation and minor maintenance
- Knowledge of city routes, sanitation tools, and safety protocols
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Dependability, initiative, and the ability to work under supervision or independently
Work Environment
- Primarily outdoor work in varied weather conditions
- Involves physical labor and operation of large sanitation vehicles
- May include early morning hours or occasional overtime
