The City of Elkins is seeking a dedicated and dependable Municipal Court Clerk to support the daily operations of the Municipal Court. Job Summary:

This role requires exceptional organizational skills, strong interpersonal communication, and the ability to manage legal and financial documentation with accuracy and discretion. As the sole administrative support for the Municipal Court, the Municipal Court Clerk plays a central role in upholding court procedures and public trust. This position reports directly to the Municipal Court Judge.

Job Duties:

  • Schedule hearings, prepare court dockets, and notify defendants and jurors
  • Maintain and protect all court records, files, citations, and legal documents
  • Collect and process fines, fees, appearance bonds, and daily deposits
  • Prepare subpoenas, warrants, and court correspondence as directed by the Judge
  • Accurately enter and update information in the court records system
  • Record and maintain the Judge’s decisions and official court outcomes
  • Communicate with attorneys, law enforcement, and public agencies regarding cases
  • Administer oaths and manage pre-court and post-court documentation
  • Prepare monthly reports and ensure compliance with State and City requirements
  • Assist with the preparation of the court budget and annual reporting
  • Monitor and implement new legal requirements relevant to municipal courts

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • At least 2 years of work experience related to court operations, legal office work, or public administration
  • Bookkeeping or financial handling experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with municipal procedures or legal documentation is a plus

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and data entry skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and court or records management systems
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and confidentiality
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work independently
  • Confidence in communicating with the public and judicial partners
  • Familiarity with court terminology and procedures is highly valued

 

Work Environment:

  • Office-based, in-person position located at Elkins City Hall
  • May require attendance at court sessions and occasional evening work
  • Requires prolonged sitting and some light lifting (up to 15 pounds)
  • Fast-paced environment involving legal documentation and public interactions
