Police Civil Service (Patrolman) - Up to $20,000 Recruitment Incentive

POLICE DEPARTMENT 

The City of Elkins Police Department is recruiting for the police force to further its mission to provide public safety and maintain order while upholding the United States Constitution and the West Virginia Constitution. The law enforcement officers pledge to the principles of integrity, fairness, respect, and professionalism at all times.

Applicants are now being encouraged to submit a full application for consideration for the police civil service test regardless of whether applicant has completed successful graduation from the police academy or not. 

EARN UP TO $20,000 IN RECRUITMENT INCENTIVES AS A WV CERTIFIED OFFICER AND $4,500 AS AN UNCERTIFIED OFFICER. 

• WV Certified Officers receive $15,000 paid on hiring and an additional $5,000 paid after two years of satisfactory service.

• The City of Elkins will pay for qualified reinstated Elkins Police Officers who are eligible to return to pay any contractual obligation costs incurred which is still owed to another Department of Police as another hiring incentive.

• Uncertified Officers receive $3,000 incentive paid upon receiving WV Law Enforcement Officer certification after successful completion of the academy. Additional $1,500 incentive paid after two years of satisfactory service.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•Enforces city, county, and state laws; initiates investigations into violations of those laws.

• Patrols, protects, and responds to calls for protection of life and property in the assigned jurisdiction.

• Issues citations, makes arrests, and/or warns drivers about unlawful practices.

• Directs traffic and traffic flow during emergencies or because of congestion.

• Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies and emergency services staff in emergencies.

• Operates specialized and tactical equipment and conducts accident investigation and riot control. 

• Drafts, maintains, and reviews records on investigations, arrests, and all other departmental actions.

• Communicates regularly with superiors regarding departmental matters, case and investigation progress, and public relations needs.

• Participates in public hearings, media and press interviews, and other public relations events required to inform the public.

• Drafts, implements and executes departmental budget, rules, and policies.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.  


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

• Police applicants must be 18 years old on the day of the written exam.

• Must be able to pass a physical exam, drug screening, and law enforcement qualification tests.

• Possession of valid drivers license
